After finding out the totals for my Big 4, I was FLOORED to learn my pack weighed so much! I purchased it in 2008, so that was before my UL awareness was awakened. I'm thrilled I could get down to 10 pounds tho. Thanks to this wonderful site, I am finding out new ultralight tricks every day.
Happy hiking, ya'll. <3
I'm with you. When I got back into camping and backpacking after a 20+ year hiatus, I spent the big bucks on all the "best" gear. It looked something like this:
Osprey Aether 70: 82 oz ($225)
Mountain Hardware Viperine 2: 86 oz ($225)
Therm-a-Rest 1" Inflatable pad: 31.5 oz ($60)
Kelty Light Year 25° bag: 42 oz ($70)

Old Total over 15 lbs, $580
I am not sure which hurts more, the weight or the cost?
I have since pretty much cut that in half. If I only knew then what I know now....

It cost a lot of money to be 15 lbs. It cost a whole lot more to cut that in half.
I hate to part with good gear (old stuff). I have been using it as loaner gear for fellow scout leaders (former marine or army) who are less concerned about weight. But when I look at how much I put into it, I would really like to sell some of it to recoop some of the losses (to reinvest in a light-weight Cuben Tarp!)
I've got a week long section planned for the fall. It would be great to have my "Big 4" down in the 6½ lb range.

I'll keep my eyes open for ya. Maybe by the end of the Summer someone will want to get rid of their Cuben Tarp and you'll get it for a song! Yes please!
Sell on eBay? Buy more gear.Buffalo Skipper, But when I look at how much I put into it, I would really like to sell some of it to recoop some of the losses (to reinvest in a light-weight Cuben Tarp!)
Some cuben gear is so beautiful. I am so tempted to go for it.
And since I just figured out how to type in list forminstead of running type i'm gonna list it again.....cause I need the practice.
