    Default Virginia Bears

On 5/19 I'll start a weeklong hike NOBO from Thunderhill shelter to Rockfish Gap and was just wondering about the bear presence in this area and whether there is a need to hang food with bears in mind or just protect it from ordinary critters.

I would definately hang your food. They are spotted around Peaks of Otter quite frequently, which is not far from Thunderhill Shelter.

I wouldn't worry. The bears in the area mentioned are hunted so they are skittish. I have never had a problem here.

    Always hang your food.

Unless you are in southern GA - then consider a bear canister as recommended

Always hang your bag when near SNP. I've been hiking there my whole life and the bears are becoming more aggressive.
