Default Help on GPS maps for App trail

My son is going on a 50 mile hike with a few in his BS troop in June, in the TN/NC area of the APP trail. He has a Garmin Legend GPS, and we are looking for suggestions on software available that is downloadeable into the GPS. I see MapTech has a specific App Trail one, and Garmin has topo maps that can also be downloaded ointo the GPS. Any info on which is easier to use, or will show the actual trail, with shelters/waypoints etc. and or other areas of interest/safety? Any and all suggestions on this or other GPS tips is appreciated as we are very new to GPS's and hiking on the trail.
    Thnaks in advance!

My advice would be to leave the GPS at home. You don't need the high tech gadgets to enjoy the trail.

Be careful there ... the 3rd party products don't typically transfer map data to your GPS. They may transfer waypoints or routes to (and from) the GPS unit, but not map data. For that you have to go with the manufacturer product.
