    Default Mountaineering

I would like to learn about it in order to climb the really high peaks of the west, alps, himalays, etc. Where would one start with something like this? Mountaineering school?

Lots of climbing schools around the country. You want instruction in doing "mixed routes" (snow, rock and ice) not just bouldering or light alpine climbing.

If you are serious about this you need to learn to rock climb back east FIRST. Rope work is rope work and knots are knots, not understanding these things and having poor judgement concerning weather and avalanche hazards are a couple of reasons why high-altitude mountaineering is about a million times more dangerous than skydiving. Get a copy of "Freedom of the Hills" and read it about six times before you go out west, after you've learned knots and rope safety. Falcon Guides has some good knot and rope books.
