The Green Mountain Club likes hikers to avoid mountain trails during mud season

But of course people still go hiking in Vermont this time of year, some trails are less muddy than others. Here is a trail report from ten days ago on Views From The Top:

Mt. Mansfield is in a state park, and officially, it is closed between April 15 and Memorial Day.

As I type this I can see Mt Mansfield from my window and last nights rain fell as snow on the mountain. Three days ago I was on some side trails near Camel's Hump south of Mansfield and the snow and ice was still present starting at about the 2,200 foot level. Ice and snow will linger well into May and as it has already been mentioned the trails are technically closed. Conditions on other area trails have been pretty good and we will get several days of 80s temps which will help dry things out further.
