Quilt or Sleeping Bag?

Which do you use and why? Do you think a sleeping bag is better than a quilt or a quilts better than a sleeping bag and why?

Ditto! but only because I want to use the hood, which is tough to do unless you're using the sleeping bag as it was designed to be used.

Looks like REI lists has over 400 results for sleeping bags and 8 for quilts. I think it's more than a herd mentality, I think most people find sleeping bags to be more comfortable because they are usually warmer.

If I am dealing with any kind of cold, I'll use a sleeping bag every time. If it's running warm, I might use a quilt to save a little weight and for easy ventilation.

Quilts do work in the cold if they have enough loft and width; and you have enough insulation between you and the ground.

I have LL Bean rectangular down sleeping bags that I use in adjustment to the temps. During the summer months thay are only used as quilts. I have the 0, 20 and the 40 degree down bags. Works for me. Using a mummy bag is out of the question,,,never happen.

It took me over 55 years to finally discover the benefits of a quilt. Now that I'm using them, I can't think of any reason to use a bag again.

I squirm around too much to use a quilt in cold conditions. If I slept more still I would think the same way.

Ditto. I only use an actual quilt in the dead of summer, when the air leaks will be balmy.

I use quilts year round....100% hammock hanging....TQ and UQ....Because they work the best, save weight, offer complete freedom in the hammock and are warm
