When I bought my first pair of Crocs I got them at Great Outdoor Provision Co. and paid $29.99. They had a whole display rack, front and back, full of Crocs in all kinds of colors. A raccoon made off with oneof them in SNP and I threw the other one in the dumpster at Lewis Mtn Campground, leaving me Croc-less.

Today I went to Wal-Mart (first time in months I'd been to wally world) to pick up a pair of knock offs and they didn't have a single pair of adult size imitation Crocs.

So, off to Great Outdoor Provision again to get the real deal. The display rack was gone and they only had 4 or 5 pair left - small, and xl. I wear a L but settled for the XL.

I asked the sales guy, "What's up with no Crocs?" He said that the company had gotten so bad at filling orders that they were discontinuing them. I don't know what that means, or if it's even true, but that was his reason why they were getting out of the Croc business.

I tried on a pair of those today and thought they were ungodly uncomfortable. There has to be a trick to getting them sized right.

I understand that you need to wear toesocks with the VFF, and that getting the right size is critical. I ordered a pair (on 3 week backorder) from REI with a 15% off coupon. Can always return them if I don't like them.I had seen these (you can't miss the weird colors) hanging on packs on the AT in Georgia last April, and several of my running friends have them, so I thought I'd give them a shot. They look like moderately armored socks, nothing more. But I never found a pair of Crocs that I could stand. I carried Airwalk Connect Water Shoes (wonderful) on several hikes, including fording rivers on the Maine AT, but you can't find them anymore.

Ive been through 4 pair, but thats at work. THey are great for walking around on concrete floors all day. I have had the straps break off on 2 pairs, but I never use them anyway, they stay folded up to the top. I couldnt see hiking in them due to the width of them but I am considering them for camp shoes too. And not the Walmart ripoffs either! Im not sure about crossing rivers or what not with them, Im not sure they would stay on, but they do have some that tighten with bungees and are more like a sandle!

They changed (ie. layed off their staff) staff. http://www.dailycamera.com/news/2009...ora-warehouse/

There main warehouse moved to LA and guess what, efficiency went down!!! Such a promising local company but they decided to go the big wig route and lost their ass!

Default AND to the original question....

IT was a fad that propelled the company, but they should have seen that and diversified but did not.

    Too much Icarus.

My Merrell's are as comfortable as their shoes and the Merrells are functionable.

Yeah, you have to wonder about taking a foam shoe company public.

Of course, Atkins (the low carb people), were talking about going public at one point too.

Seems like big retail (LL, Land's End) all has knockoffs of them. No widths that I have seen yet.

I really like my Croc Mary Janes for camp shoes & water crossings. I've hiked mild trails with them, but sure would not have hiked in them in the Stecoah section I did in May.

I will be sorry when they wear out if I can't replace them. I find them very comfy.

Waldies are the Original foam clog, they were created in 2001 (check out their history at http://www.waldies.net/aboutus.asp#top ). On the Crocs vs. Waldies front, here's the latest and greatest: http://www.waldies.net/aboutus.asp#CROXS

Waldies are more durable and comfortable than any other foam clog on the market. There are even Waldies on SALE at http://www.waldies.net/Waldies_Clearance_s/87.htm

I have a bright yellow pair of Waldies that I bought in 2003. I have new pairs now but I still wear my old yellow pair backpacking and beyond. These shoes are incredibly light and they last forever!

At first I didn't like Crocs, made fun of them in fact. But for my very hard to shop for Grandfather I thought they'd make good shoes for him to slip on and check the mail in. (He's got everything else.) He hated them and gave them back, said I should get my money back. Well, we wear the same size and didn't have a receipt.

Now it's years later and the bottom of them have practically worn slick. They don't look the best on, but they're comfy - practical - light - and I'd say indescructable. Who uses that rear strap anyway? I only use it when I'm swimming in them. Also, I wear them almost everywhere around the house, working in the garden (that's where I got them 1st was in the garden center), mowing the yard, kayaking, shopping, house shoes, the beach, the river, the lake...

I did have the strap brake once when I was walking on slick rocks at the river and much to my surprise the button snapped back in place and locked. I think it's made to come apart and snap back rather than break.

I looked at crocs but damn, they are heavy. And they dont pack small.
