My friends and I have Grubpacks that we use to protect food against mice, etc. It would not work against bears I'm sure. Their website says it's for use in areas with mice, rats and other smaller animals. One friend did use hers on the AT in North Carolina and Virginia with no problems. I know firsthand it does work really well in the Southwestern desert areas.

Over on backpackinglight.com a fellow named Ryan Linn kindly informed folks of a new product by Ursack, the Ursack Minor --- same size as a regular Ursack (650 c.i.), not bear proof but rodent proof, and weighs just 2.7 oz. I believe this is substantially lighter than an equivalent capacity rodent proof bag by any of the competitors. I just ordered one, at any rate, seems like it hits a sweet spot between a 1 oz food bag and an 8 oz regular Ursack, so I'll be bringing this with me on the AT this year.
