    Question Aquamira-Smaller bottles?

I've been thinking about putting Aquamira into 2-1/2 oz. lighter bottles to save a little weight.

To those of you that have Thru'ed or are long distance hikers that use Aquamira, have y'all done this?

It seems that carrying treatment for 30 gallons of water at a time is just dead weight. I saw some 1/2 oz. dropper bottles at backpackinglight.com and think this is a good option.

Um, how many grams of weight will this save you?

And if you carry smaller bottles of AM in order to save these grams, then you'll need to fill those little bottles up again pretty frequently, i.e. you'll have to use a "bounce box" at your town stops, which many people either don't do, or use minimally.

Refilling your Aqua Mira bottles once a week or so in Trail towns instead of carrying a whole bottle set might seem to be a good idea, but how much extra will this system cost you in postage costs after six months?

I know people that spend hundreds of dollars on a thru-hike shuttling along a bounce box full of stuff, and in most cases, this is money that could be spent on other things.

In short, I think Dave's idea might make sense on shorter trips, especially for really committed gram weenies, but I'm not sure this makes sense on a longer trip, unless you're already committed to regular use of a bounce box and are prepared to allocate the funds for its repeated use.

I repackage aquamira in these bottles from Gossamer Gear:

    http://www.gossamergear.com/cgi-bin/...r_bottles.html

They weigh about 1oz total when full compared to around 3oz for the stock bottles. If I was thru hiking I probably wouldn't bother, but my trips are all 7 days or less so it makes since to repackage to smaller containers. 2oz is 2oz.

Don't weigh that much to me. And it doesn't take long to go through it, IMO. What gets me is sometimes one bottle runs out before the other. ?
