That's my dog, Echo. He's a fine young dog.
Nice article and congrats Warren. For all the controversy and whatnot surrounding Warren, he does indeed love the very same trail most of us love. At least maybe we can all find that in common in this moment in time.

Obligatory Warren-bashing comment:
What's that think on Warren's back in the photos? It look like some sort of pack.. on his back... Bizarre.
Congrats, Warren, I enjoyed the article - and I enjoyed the cover as well. I think that the article is well written and I appreciated the view point from someone who has been mentored by Warren, and then in some ways surpassed him.
My one single criticism is on the poem part of the piece. While for most of us this issue is long dead, I don't appreciate the authors treatment of the situation. Having been there at the time, words cannot describe how polarizing of an act it was. He was openly booed, and about half of the audience walked out of the opening ceremonies in protest. Many people were very hurt and many people were very angry.
I don't want to go into details or debate "the poem", that's been done here enough. But to mention "the poem" in passing, provide no details about the content or the context, and then to criticize those of us who had a strong reaction - that is irresponsible journalism. I'm all for bringing up controversial topics - but at least pretend to get the other side of the story. Hell - at least mention that 9/11 was involved.
That being said - I'm imploring the WB'ers not to re-open this whole poem conversation. Its been discussed over and over again here, and just about anything that can be said has been said. I'm only commenting on the one-sided reporting about the issue. Everyone can make mistakes, and I do consider "the poem" a mistake, but I'm also not going to hold Warren's feet to the fire every time this comes up. Its done and over and most of us have moved on.
Despite the philosophical differences that I have had with Warren on this board over the years, its impossible not to admit that the AT is a better place with him than without him. And I think it says something of the strength of character of the organization that he started that they were able to take a stand against him on this issue. It also says something about the organization that they were able to welcome him back as well.

Unlike most of the comments in this thread I thot the article was poorly written for the following reasons:
1. As Chomp stated, the info about the poem was one sided. Inasmuch as the poem was referred to, the actual poem should have been included in a side box, to allow the reader to read it and draw his or her own conclusions.
2. When most people read about completing the trail they automatically think backpacking. I thot the article should have clarified how WD has completed most of his hikes. This is not meant to be critical in a way, shape, or form.
3. And the main criticism I had is it did not state "why" WD is POTY. I understand he did a great job of mentoring the author. But POTY? What is the criteria? Who were the runner ups?
The article was well written for what it included. My evaluation is based on what it didn't include.

I only offer this to strengthen your skills as a writer. This is the word I think you intended:
con·cur (kn-kûr)
intr.v. con·curred, con·cur·ring, con·curs
1. To be of the same opinion; agree: concurred on the issue of preventing crime. See Synonyms at assent.
2. To act together; cooperate.
3. To occur at the same time; coincide: icy sleet that concurred with a forceful wind.
Congrats on the award Warren. You have certainly made a lasting impact on Jennifer and many others.
I thought the part about breaking Warrens AT "record" was very misleading.
That's a very old record already broken many times. It reads in the artical like WD holds the record and she is setting a new one. I thought that was a bit self-serving.
Otherwise nice artical - even if he hasn't done a lot of LD backpacking.
