Default Anybody carrying a Becker NEcker ??

I have been looking for a while for a real knife.

A light neck or sheath knife, drop point rounded blade that I could use for skinning, light enough to put in a pack, but with a heavy enough blade to baton wood.

I think I have found it.

I really like the blade shape but have yet to use it.
Should be a perfect skinning knife with no nooks and cranies for bacteria to grow.

A bit short for batoning wood, but it would do in a pinch.

Light at 2.6oz for just the knife, 4.2 with the kydex sheath.
You could probably craft a leather sheath

Not sure about the edge though.

Also got a smiths 1 oz sharpener while I was at it

I've got one. I like it. I never tried skinning anything with it - but I keep it VERY sharp and could skin something with it if I needed too.

I've got a RAT Izula and love it. Maybe a little bit of overkill for the AT, but it's a great knife.

I have the Becker Necker and really like it and my son just purchased a Rat Izula and I like it a lot.

Both are great knives. The blade and sheath of the Becker is larger than that of the Rat. Although both could be used for batoning small stuff, of the two, the Becker would probably be better if you wanted to split small pieces of wood, OTOH the Rat is lighter and takes less space.

My suggestion... buy one of them.

I looked at the izula too. The main reason I chose the Becker was the price and the more rounded tip.

At the same time I also got one of these. A more conventional knife. More of a bushcraft knife. Stainless steel and a nice handle and sheath for heavier work. Still does not weigh that much at 7.8 oz with the sheath. Not bad for $30.

I've got a Rat3 D2 as well. VERY sharp knife. But I like it on my belt. The necker was an easy carry with a pack because I never had to worry about how it rode when I rucked up. I carried my Becker Necker 815 miles in 2008. Sausage and cheese were about the extent of its use though.

I always thought a cold steel K4 would make a better camp/kitchen knife. Unfortunately I did not buy one before they were discontinued.

    Could be bigger

I have one of these Kabars. 9" long 1/4" thick blade

Best heavy knife I have ever used. Its my #1 hog hunting knife.
    Could become my #1 backpacker.

Definately heavy enough to chop wood with.

    Nice Kabar,
    The Cold Steel Bowie has a 9 1/2" blade, 5/16" thick' 14 1/2" overall
It is a nice knife but heavy at 17.5 ounces.

    Gak,

You got me beat on the blade dimensions but they are about the same weight.
The Kabar has a deep blade though. One think I can say is the handle is top notch.
It is soft, dampens some of the vibrations when chopping and whatnot, and the hook
at the end of the handle keeps it in you hands.

You could not give me a machete unless it had a similar handle shape.

Actually I wish Kabar made one of these with a 16" blade. That would be about as perfect as it could get for a machete for me.

    Very nice,
I think I will carry my Trailmaster bowie on my Thru-Hike after reading the story about the coyote attack on that poor girl.

Or the college couple that got DRT'd in Va.

If either that couple or the girl that got attacked by the yotes, would have had even a dinky Ruger LCP 380 acp that would have changed the odds significantly.

Guess it depends how how much weight you are willing to carry vs fending off a wild critter or a homicidal maniac. I never used to hike, camp or boat trip with anything except a swiss army knife unless it was hunting season.

Geez, I even hitchhiked around the entire USA for 4 months in the early 70s with only a small pocket knife. Now I think differently about personal protection.

My dads neighbor got mauled by a 1500# wild bull about 4 years ago when he was out in the woods without a gun. I told him he should invest in a 44 magnum and strap it on.

I hear ya, I agree, I have carried a pistol for 26 years (legally with permit of course) because I lived in the city, Just sold my 9mm and now I carry this:

    Ruger 44Mag. Single Action
I have never even had to draw my weapon, Thank God, And I hope I never have to.
BUT, If it is me or the Bear or Coyote or whatever?
You do what you gotta do.
