    Default Spam-Ramen Au Jus

This is something new we tried out. Total cost of this big meal was $1.43. These items could easily be found in any grocery store along the trail. If you can't find singles you could use a normal can of spam and share it with another hiker.

    1Pk Spam Singles (3oz)
1Pk Ramen noodles (don't use flavoring pack)
    1Tbsp Flour
    1Tsp McCormick Au Jus mix
    1C Boiling water

You can do this either in a pot or by freezer bag.

Mix up tbsp of flour and tsp of Au Jus in quart size bag thoroughly. Carry Ramen in your pack with factory package. When in camp remove noodles and break up really well into quart bag. Add 1 cup boiling water and let sit on its side for about 2 minutes in a cozy.

After sitting mix up noodles and Au Jus gravy, let sit for an additional 3 minutes. Open Spam package and slice into small chunks. Add spam to cozy at 5 minutes, mix and let sit for an additional minute to heat up spam.

If you like your noodles a little soupy, add an additional 1/4 c`up of hot water. The Spam will help give a little salty flavor and it will take like beef from the Au Jus.

Forgot to mention you can also add dried veggies to this for additional substance. We liked it best with onions, celery and carrots.

I think it would be good with dehydrated cooked ground beef. Less weight, too.

The other day I got an unsolicted email offering to sell me cheap canned meat.
Love people and use things; never the reverse.

Mt. Katahdin would be a lot quicker to climb if its darn access trail didn't start all the way down in Georgia.

Absolutely it would. I only posted this as an example of what "could" be found along the trail for cheap. It was in response to another post about hiking the trail on a budget. Reality is, with two packages of ramen, your meal would be about a thousand calories and around a 1.50

Anyway I failed to make reference to the OP'r when I put this up but it is what it is. It's cheap, if you fry the Spam first it tastes better, it's full of salt and fat for the end of the day and completely unhealthy. What more is there to ask for!?

Could you use potato flaks in place of flour? I don't normally carry flour.

probably - flour is just there to thicken Au Jus but it's probably not needed.

That is what I was thinking. I think potato flakes would thicken it if added slowly.

Those Spam turkey singles are pretty good broken up into a dish like this, you could do the same thing with a chicken or turkey gravy mix and the turkey Spam. Dried cranberries (Craisins) would make it even better.

I actually visited the Spam museum, in Wisconsin, I think.

Quite interesting and you would not believe the different types that you probably cannot get locally.

Since I am not very picky about what I eat, being a hiker and such, as long as it doesn't bite me first, I actually like Spam, Cajun is probably the best.

Tried this differently today with Liptons Recipe Secrets Beefy Onion Dried Soup Mix. Found at Wal-Mart for 1.28. Two packages for a total of 6 tablespoons. 1 Tablespoon in with the ramen - was way better than the Au Jus mix...
