Need a Radio

I am looking for a tiny am/fm radio with headphone jack that runs on just 1 AA battery.....anyone have something like this or know of a brand to look at? Heck I havent been able to find one so I don't even know if something like this exists????

I had this one, but gave it away and I've been sorry ever since.
Ditch the headphones and get a pair of earbuds and you're all set.
It is AM, FM, TV, weather with digital tuning. It also has a lockout switch so that you don't accidentally turn it on or off or mess up the tuning if it's in your pocket or on your belt.

The best trail radio I have found is the Kaito KA800. Although it doesn't use AA batteries it is definitely worth checking out..AM/FM/NOAA/MP3 lockout switch etc.
I have used this radio on the trail for many multiple day hikes without any problems.
The battery lasts a long time and really easy to recharge, I always carry a backup battery but I never have had to use it. The NOAA information is essential and the voice recording feature has many uses.

I have the model Darwin posted and it is excellent. I also switched out the headphones for earbuds. It runs a LONG time on one AAA battery.

Getting weather reports on the trail is hit-and-miss. You may not get any signal in camp (down low) but if it is important try again once you get to a ridge/peak.

Try RadioShak. I purchased an FM radio there for my thru hike that was the size of a credit card, ran on 1 AAA battery and was only that thick. Came with ear buds and worked great on most of the trail but FM only. $22?

Many cell phones now days have MP3 and FM radios, find one that also has a Qwerty keyboard (journaling) and a camera and you have a decent all-in-1 electronic device.

I put fresh AAA batteries in my headlamp, then run the used ones flat in my radio.
I really like the sensitivity of the sony radio mentioned. The TV band no longer works, now that TV is digital.

These are great. I bought a new MP3 but I really wanted something with an AM radio in it for news, talk, weather reports, etc. All MP3s have FM radios...why? FM is predominately music and you already have music on an MP3 with the music you uploaded.

Most of Radio Shack crap is Sangean in disguise. Because you knocked it down to ONE AAA my favorite cannot be posted so seriously look at Mega 82 recommedation and the Sony.

Good point many overstock places are still trying to sell the analog TV radio....FYI Digital Radio AUDIO cannot be offered as the picture & sound is make or break - cross the room and both crack up and cannot be recieved.

Reason that they don't have AM is that it requires too much wire for the antenna. With the size of the mp3 players today, it's hard enough to get the antenna for FM (it's built onto the PCB). AM would be useless without a decent antenna.

Arden you are on target about the AM radio for MP3 players, there isn't enough interest. The FM Antenna in most portables are one of the legs of the headphones. So Fm is on a micro chip and can be possible.

It's not too far in the future when you will be able to get a quality made solar/hydrogen cell powered UL compact topo map downloadable GPS, 14 mega pixel camera, MP3 player, FM/AM radio, internet connectivity capable, video cell ph with excellent national or global coverage, altimeter watch, audio book capable device with personal ringtones that can be preset to have hot prepared trail dinners beamed down via the ether to your preset camping coordinates and awaiting you when you step into camp!

I used to imagine one device that would do everything, but came to the realization that they're not such a great idea. If you use your cell phone as an MP3 player / radio, what happens when the battery runs out? Now you can't even use the phone

I've got an iPod that has no radio at all. When I'm hiking (overnight) alone, I like to have the FM radio. There is some kind of companionship that takes place between me and the DJ at the other end. I guess it's just human nature to want to hear another live voice from time to time. As much as I sometimes wish for TV, radio, and other media to go away, I would miss it if I were out on the trail alone for too long.

Goodwill by me in cleveland usually has a decent selection of radios. Small ones are hit and miss. I picked up a small single AAA, AM-FM one where the antenna was a thin flexible cord that I would just paperclip to the top of my pack. It was awesome till it got lost. Wish I knew how made it originally.
