some of my friends are going to hot springs this weekend. Can you give me a suggestion for them to camp near hotsprings and 1 day north or south? Thank you so much for your suggestions!

There is a campground near the river in town (http://www.creekridgecamping.com/index.html)
or cross the bridge and camp on the other bank by the trail.

here's a list with some more campground type spots:

I was just there this weekend, I would recommend Max Patch. Plenty of places to camp. If you would like to camp one night and stay at a lodge one night , I would recommend Kana'ti lodge which is about a 45 minute walk from Max Patch. An absolutely wonderful place.

Plenty of tent spots on the river, on the trail outside of town and on lover's leap.

I was just in Hot Springs last week. There's a nice little spot for camping on the trail just below the summit of Rich Mountain, which is about 8 miles north of Hot Springs on the AT. Right before the site, there is a side trail leading to the Fire Tower on the summit (and a makeshift sign pointing this out). Keep going on the AT a few yards past this trail, there is a brook and then a sign that says "Campsite 50 yards" if I recall correctly. You'll come upon a nice clearing to the right (east) of the trail, where there is a small fire ring, some logs set up as benches, and some spots for quite a few tents. This site is mentioned in AT Guide for NC/TN. Be sure to make the side trip to the Fire Tower while you're there!

I also noticed several makeshift campsites - clearings with fire rings and space for a tent or two - right off the trail in a few places between Tanyard Gap and Rich Mountain.

My favorite "near Hot Springs" camp site is about 5 miles N on the AT, about 200' north of the trail to the Rich Mt Fire tower. Lots of trees for hangers, lots of flat spots for tenters & a table of sorts. The spring about 1/2 way between teh fire tower & the campsite flows well.
    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
