    You could do it that way, but I really meant tomato powder (link is just one example)

    What about starting the softening of the chickpeas earlier in the day? Perhaps carry them separate from the other ingredients. Around lunch, add some water to the bag. Then at dinner cook them with the other ingredients. Or the other thing you could do is after dehydrating the chickpeas, put them in a paper bag and smash them with a mallet. Then they'd be smaller pieces.
