Surprised that someone hasn't mentioned Shiba Inu yet. They were specifically bred for trekking the mountains of Japan, and love snowy hiking. Small, clean, obedient. Shiba's self clean, and rarely smell or get nasty. Very energetic, warm bodied, and loving, they are the perfect breed for hiking. I'll be getting one here shortly. Actually considered this year getting one, but I'm going to wait until after my thru-hike before I get one.

My Golden hikes with me and the local hiking club regularly. She loves human attention and doesnt chase after wildlife. She likes to walk in front of the lead hiker but will heal if I tell her to.

Other people make better hiking partners, but they don't obey as well.
I love dogs but have seen a couple of fights on the trail (and far more tense moments as owners had to run to grab their dog before things got serious).
I've seen dogs lie down in a spring (Bigelows, Maine) while I was pumping water, and had one sneak a bite out of my dinner dish when I wasn't looking. No biggie for me, that's just what dogs do when their owners aren't around.
I have tried to give a piece of my mind to a few bad owners.............
they weren't interested.
If I see you with your dog I will most likely lavish your dog with love and affection and then ask, "So who is this human with you?"

not just the breed
Although there may be some breeds that don't do well on hikes, I dont' think there is a best breed for hiking, per se.
I hike with two dogs-- a terrier mix with short legs but lots of stamina, and a shiba inu. Both do well on the trail. I've also hiked with golden retrievers in the past. They did well on the trail when they were young.
Any dog that likes to hike and has the stamina should do well, all other factors considered.

I do have to second this opinion. My shiba loves to hike. He's also loving and doesn't smell. But obedient? We are still training him. Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

my dog does awesome...what's to "track" a scent every now and then...getting her to settle down at night sometimes is a PITA...she's on high alert... on a long hot day...she's out like a light...but then I gotta' jab her when she snores...but ..she love's to hike...

I may be biased, but I think my Sib. Husky is the best hiking companion I have ever had. He is a working dog, so maybe it is the training he's had, but I love Jack. If I'm hiking, he's going.

Chihuahuas. Lighter, fit in most packs, eat the least amount of food. Can be trained to eat shelter mice unless too large (the mouse, not the dog).

I have a Lab. Don't mean to offend folks, but there is no better breed of dog. Smart, athletic, easy going, friendly and very very trainable.
