Post New Jersey's bear hunt underway

New Jersey's first bear hunt in five years began 30 minutes before sunrise Monday. Hunters in the state's seven northwest counties have six days to bag one bear of any age or sex. ... 6,680 permits have been issued for the weeklong hunt. "If the weather is good, and hunters get out, we hope to take 375 to 700 bears," said David Chandra, the Director of New Jersey Fish and Wildlife.

More bear per square mile in that section of NJ than all of North America. Unfortunately for the bear, they need to be thinned.

So, after you shoot a 200-500 lb bear what do you do with it? Leave it out there? Carry it out? And do you feel good afterward? Sorry, I just can't imagine doing this unless you were starving and trying to save yourself or family.

what do they do? freeze bears till enough butchers who want to make bucks chopping and skinning get caught up? or does every hunter do his own butchering? cause jersy aint got that many freezers available for that.and how many familys wanna eat bear for that long? or does it keep forever? and how rich are thees guys? or does bear chopping cost so little?and who has all this money/ are bear killers all rich? and who the hell want to eat that crap anyway/ and who uses the fur? whats up with 1600+ licences? how is it safe what with all those rounds going off? and who can hunt in such a crowd/ sounds like a duck shoot.man that aint huntin. u want hunting? step outside my door and try not to get shot by crackheads. they hunt year round. what ever happened to trap and transport? are their no bear shortages anywhere? is their no money to save a single bear? god help us.

Matt, bear meat has never been big in NJ. Now I have to cancel my hike 'cause I'm more afraid of the hunters shooting me than a bear eating me.

Matty - They are a problem. I have co-workers and employees who live in NWNJ and Bears are always coming around looking for scraps, ripping into garage doors. Have a BBQ? Have to move your grill into the garage afterwards so the bear don't come through and claw it up and tip it over. Plenty of folks who used to put thier trash out at night had their grabage strewn all over until they started waiting until daylight to put their trash out.

good for the bears, good for the people. BBq bear meat is pretty good. Of course everyone knows that meat comes from a store wrapped in plastic. Nothing dies. Bears are a renewable resource.

As a Jersey resident, I say leave the bears alone and sell licenses to the hunters, but let them loose in Trenton, Camden and Newark. No bag limit on gang members and drug dealers. May help our deficit problem too, cause you all know them der hunters like killin' things. Probably sell 100,000 licenses at $100 a pop.
