Iron Mountain Trail starting at Straight Branch or Creek Junction? You might be able to workout a loop if you incorporated the Creeper Trail. http://www.natgeomaps.com/ti_786_zoo...rVisible=false

Yes you can hike the IMT. It is the old AT just north of Damascus. So there are old shelters you can stay in if that's your thing. I wonder if the outfitters in Damascus could help you out and shuttle you if you need it.

I hear good things about the Pine Mountain Trail which is on the Kentucky border.

How far north into Virginia are you willing to drive? There's some good hiking in the George Washington National Forest in the Great North Mountain area on the VA/WV border and along Massanuten ridge which is the ridge between the AT and I-81 near Luray.

The Tuscarora Trail passes through both areas and I believe you can fashion a loop hike on Massanuten. For Great North Mountain, you can base-camp at Wolf Gap and hike trails on either side of the road, plus you can loop hike with trails and Forest Service roads.

The PATC maintains trails in these areas - I used to work on a trail crew on Great North Mountain until I moved too far away. PATC also has maps & guides.
