    Default Best, cheap solo tent

    Hello everyone,
I'm planning my first thru hike and I just realized that my current tent is far too heavy. I have a High Peak South Col 4 season tent weighing in at 9 pounds. I wanted to know if there were a good, cheap solo tent out there-- the best tent for under, say, $100? Thank you all in advance for your suggestions. Also, the other tent is for sale if anyone is interested.

I picked up this one from Sam's 3 years ago. 3.2lbs and closely resembles a MSR Hubba Hubba but with a single door. I used it on rainy and windy nights and it held up great. $80 on Amazon.

ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr. I would sell you mine but I still like to sleep on the ground in the late fall/early winter.

You can find one for under $100 easily if you look around

A hundred bucks is kind of limiting if you're looking for a "real" tent, but doable if you're smart about bargain shopping: look into used gear, or models from previous years. In Atlanta, you're close to about four REIs; I'd suggest getting on their mailing list, because every so often they have a "garage sale" where they try to get rid of returned gear, old models and former rentals at fair discounts.

You'd probably be fine with a good tarp. That would be in your price range. Or maybe the Eureka spitfire.

I will third the Eureka Spitfire, it was what I used, and it held up wonderful! The only 'disadvantage' is the not free standing. However, this is extremely minor.

If I was totally broke and had to go out tonight I'd look at the Eureka tents. NEARLY totally broke, that is.

I went with the Eureka Solitaire. Runs about $75-$90, though I have seen some for $60. Nice and compact at 2lbs 9oz, but there are many complaints about the poles breaking. I've set it up about 5 times and havent seen any issues.

I'd cast my vote for the spitfire though.

Go with the Eureka Solitaire. Used one on 1/2 of my thru. Slept in it about 40 nights. Never had a problem with it.

From what I have seen Eureka makes good tents. A little on the heavy and bulky side but very affordable. It is where I was gong to go but I ordered that Swiss Gear from Amazon. Still might sent it back and we are back to Eureka.

+1 Eureka Backcountry 1. Chech eBay for deals as well. Sold my old one there a couple of months ago.

Also check out backpackinglight.com's Gear Swap forum. It has great deals and ultralight gear. I picked up a Gossamer Gear The One tent for $125. Usually goes for $300 and wighs 16oz. Hot damn that's a deal.

Gabriel, go to campmor.com click on hotdeals and check out the 1 man tents. They have a spitfire (under100) as well as a Sierra Designs lightyear at 109. Both good tents. Good luck!

Another option would be for you to head up to the colemen outlet store off I85 near commerce ga, and see if they have the Kraz 1 in stock. Very lightweight and solid tent. around $100.
