Thumbs up Maine, truly the way life ought to be?!

Study: Maine the most peaceful U.S. state

Study: Maine the most peaceful U.S. state

"A study by the Institute for Economics and Peace finds that Maine is the most peaceful state in the country ...."

"The group lists the ten most peaceful states in order as: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Minnesota, North Dakota, Utah, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Iowa, and Washington."

Looks as if New England is well represented in the study!

I find it's always easier to fight when it warm -- war or not.

Very cool article Rain Man, thanks for posting it! I've been to Maine many times, truly a great state.

While I love Maine (in the summer), I must agree with the previous posters, long winters keep more people in the house and therefore, they have less opportunity to fight. Of course if Chicago showed up on the list, I would have to question this thought process because people there really fight over the parking spot on the city street that they shoveled out.

I was in North Dakota for 5 years. One year, they had 5 murders in the entire state. I mentioned this to my brother who was living in Houston, TX at the time and he said that would be a SLOW Tuesday night in Houston!

How the hell did Rhode Island make that list?!? Overcrowded, overtaxed, over regulated corrupt and just plain old annoying. We run to ANY other state to find solace.

In NH we always knew we were laid back. The story goes that a man 'from away' was driving along an almost deserted back roads of NH and saw an Old Timer sitting on his front porch whittling.

The guy stopped and says:"Excuse me, what do you do for excitement around here?"

The Old Timer, without looking up, and still whittling says: "I don't know, we never get that excited around here."

I was born in Manchester, NH and lived all around the state for 15 years. I moved to Maine in 2001 and live close to all the big mountains. I love Maine but I also miss NH alot. I am still considered "from away"...ayuh. I am a peaceful person.

I hear you brother, my two favorite states on the trail. Vermont gets honorable mention.

You ever try opening a jacknife one handed? Closing them one handed is scarier. The above item might not "spring" closed. I do hope the 9" blade type you see on tv isn't included.

I loved Maine when I went through it. I had several people tell me it gets down to -40 in the wintertime though, no thanks.

There is no doubt that Maine is wonderful. I know the winter's there are harsh and I would not want to live there during that part of the year, but the summers in Maine are awesome. I remember going to Maine in the summer on a family vacation when I was around five. We went to a place called Sebago Lake, and I remember it being the most beautiful place I had ever seen. The water was crystal clear and we found the rocks in the surf were actually golden in color. The nights were crisp and cool, and were great. I have never forgotten Maine's beauty, and without a doubt wish to return there some day
