Tomato powder: I know I can order it online, but could I get a can of tomato sauce from the grocery store and dehydrate it, and then throw it in a blender? Would that give the same result?

Start with tomato paste, more water already cooked out.

I tried this last night at home and it is very tasty! It is definitely being added to my backpacking cookbook

    Thanks!

O.K., I know this for a backpacking recipe, but I can't resist. . . there's a deli here that makes something so similar that I thought you all might like it - it's a home recipe though. It's called a "Taco Teaser."

Put some Fritos on the plate (they use one single serve bag)
Put some chilli over the Fritos
Then add all the stuff you'd normally put on a taco - chopped tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, taco sauce, cheese, etc.

It's major fat grams, but really good! Not health food at all.

if made in the single serve bag itself also known as a "walking taco", we use to get them in the cafeteria in high school.

After following this thread, it occured to me that for one of my backpacking meals, I could combine the Mountain House Wraps Mexican Style Beef (which I've had before, quite good), or Mountain House Chili Beans (also tasty), and pour it on top of a bag of fritos, add cheese, taco sauce, and if my first night out--can bring along those individual serving sour cream pkts from Wendy's,, and presto... "walking taco"!

Interesting. . . these other names for it and ways it's prepared in different parts of the country. I think it could be done on the trail, too. It's one of my favorite "junk food" things to eat.

Don't mean to bust a bubble but the taco taters has nothing in the way of protein and little general nutritional value. All carbs and fat from oil in the chips. On a hike, protein is needed for muscle repair after a tough day on the trail.

I might try to liven it up more, maybe with more tomato powder or even some dried veggies (soaked and boiled for a few minutes) and dried hamburg or soy granules, then add the potato and seasoning.
