Has anyone ever had any experience with http://thru-hiker.com/projects/down_quilt.php

Its a 17 oz. make it yourself down quilt and you can get everything for around $160.00. I don't have much experience sewing but i think even if i paid someone to sew it for me that would make it a real lightweight quilt for a great price.

    Any thoughts?

Ray Jardine quilt kit. Rated to 40*, I've taken it down to mid-30's comfortably. Somewhere around $100.

Whoops. Didn't notice the "down" in the thread title. My quilt isn't down, so nevermind.

I did not use the kit, but did get my supplies from Thru Hiker I have used my quilt to 25* without problem on the trail 15* at home. Cost was about $150 and the weight is 18 oz. 12oz is down from Thru Hiker. Right now I'm redoing the shell with 1/2 Cuben fiber, and should lose 2-3 oz. more Cost will be about $190

Western Mountaineering UltraLite (20*, 26 oz, $315 in 2004; now 29 oz and $385 for the medium)

Western Mountaineering HighLite (35*, 16 oz, $210 in 2006; now $280 for the medium)

Marmot Pinnacle (15*, 44 oz, can't remember what it cost in the '90s; now $370)

I've accumulated a few other bags over the decades, but I use the WM bags for all of my backpacking.

    0° Montbell Super Stretch 0
15° Montbell UL Super Spiral 1
30° Marmot Hydrogen (will be selling this one and replace with a Montbell UL Super Stretch 3) I don't like the cramped feeling of the Hydrogen nor the half zip.

Marmot Helium 15 degree mummy-style bag, around $300
I've had it for about 2 years and it's been essentially bomb-proof for me. Very comfortable, I use it when tenting and hammocking, as well as an extended period of time I spent living on a hardwood floor. Weighs 2 lb/6 oz

I gotta say, Western Mountaineering has got this post hands down. Marmot coming in a close second. Add another WM bag here, a 1983 summerlite. Forgot what I paid for it, goes to 32 deg, has an extra 3 oz of loft in the footbox and is still keeping me warm after 28 years. Now it's time for another one...
