    Default Gay Friendly AT?

Is the AT a gay friendly place? Any places to avoid or not miss along the way? Thoughts?

I by no means fit the stereotype and am not too concerned about this but just wanted to know first-hand experiences.

This is a different topic (transgender), but many of the answers apply to gay issues. I had no issues on the trail, but also the fact that I'm a lesbian rarely came up in conversation. Be discreet in certain areas (south and north), but most people are pretty accepting on the trail. (Or they just don't care)

I section hiked in Maine with a friend who is openly lesbian and there were no problems whatsoever for her. I'm sure and I truly hope you have the same experience. Happy trails.

Do we care? I would think that most backpackers (certainly from my experience) are generally accepting of others unless you are talking about something REALLY IMPORTANT (insert sarcasm) like gear.

    I don't care.

I'm only gay on weekends, so it is not as big a deal for me.

I concur with ShelterLeopard. I would recommend exercising discretion for the most part.

Hikers tend to be pretty tolerant folks in my experience.

Hikers do tend to be fairly open minded, but there will be some out there who are not. Just know that you'll probably have to deal with a few, though not many, unpleasant people.
    Don't take anything I say seriously... I certainly don't.

The AT isn't particularly gay friendly or gay hostile. As Big Cranky said above, "hikers tend to be pretty tolerant folks in my experience." That's my take too. Just be aware that all hikers are not the same and you will not only be meeting hikers on an AT hike. Some are more tolerant than others.

I'm not a gay or bisexual man but I'm aware of some bisexual and homosexual hosts along the AT that cater to AT hikers. Some hosts/owners of places are more obvious and open about their points of view/lifestyles. Some are more discreet. Some adamantly don't want their lifestyles made public. I warn you, it's a hot topic on some websites! This topic still elicits much heated controversy in some circles!

Man, the only thing I was concerned about every evening on the AT was how bad my feet and body hurt, if I had enough fuel to cook my dinner, and how fast I could go to sleep.

Trust me. You too will have more to contemplate about than that.

It's not an issue unless you make it an issue, just like in life in general.
