What is the best time of year to hike the AT thru Great Smoky Mountain National Park ? Not as a thru-hiker, as a section hiker. Weather, bugs, number of other people on trail, whatever else, considered.

For me? November, during the week. No crowds, no bugs, no leaves on the trees. Great views, good hiking weather, can get a little chilly at night.

Mid October, the weather is still nice enough, it's the peak of the color on the trees, school is back in session and once you get 5 miles from the nearest parking lot it is not crowded. If you go South bound you might hike along with a few AT thru-hikers.
