saw jennifer the speed hiker 10 miles south of the kennebec yesterday. she was heading south at 3mph. she was being chased by a cloud of black flies who ended up staying with me.

Ahhh, that's why she's going SOBO - the Black Flies keep her moving at a good clip and eliminate the urge to stop and rest at times.

They tend to follow just behind you, then catch up when you stop. Definately incentive to keep moving.

Agreed, sad that care now has to be taken when posting actual location. Nature Boy seems to be doing better, there is a LOT of time left in 2011, my bet is that he will be back!

1) Anyone thinking about doing anything nefarious has to be wondering who
is watching her and waiting to spring into action, proactively if necessary.

2) juma's post could be a red herring. If it were me I'd have friends posting
my location, all over the place. Like maybe somewhere in South Carolina.

3) I wish her safe and speedy passage.

I really don't see the point in trying to conceal your exact location. Without going into particulars, for fear of being accused of aiding someone who might want to cause trouble, it would be very simple to locate someone who is doing a hike like this.

Not providing current information on public forums and expecting others to do likewise is completely consistent with ATC/ALDHA hiker safety recomendations. She is providing as much information on a need to know basis as she wishes to be made known.

I think everyone is over-reacting just a little bit based on one incident. The OP is merely posting that they saw someone that is trying to set a record on the AT. Anyone who tries to set an AT speed record is going to attract attention, that's just how it goes.
