IMO, Secret Six Tavern, hands down.

Mushroom-swiss burger, basket o' fries and a cold Potomac Ale on tap.

I don't reccolect the name, but you climb the stairs from the parking lot up into town towards the Outfitters and it's right there on the hillside - outrageous burgers. is that the Secret Six Tavern mentioned above?

The Anvil Restaurant and the Canal House Restaurant get high marks from the hikers at the Teahorse Hostel. Also the Cannonball Deli is another favorite.

I second the Anvil Restaurant. I hit the place on the night they had all you could eat steamed shrimp.

I'm actually writing from Harpers Ferry and I've been here awhile, so here's my take: The Anvil is very nice. In town, if I was a hiker, I'd probably go to the Cannonball first.......very good food, nowhere near as expensive as other places (HF is pretty much home of the twelve dollar cheeseburger); also, the owner and his family are really nice people who are very welcoming to hikers.

For breakfast, the Country Cafe. It's a bit of a hike, unless you're staying at the new hostel in town, but it's worth it.

I have been a resident of Bolivar for the past ten years and not a fan of the downtown Harpers Ferry restaurants. Locals like me favor the Bolivar restaurant scene. IMHO, the 1.5 mile trek up from downtown is worth the walk (or drive).

My recommendations - For breakfast and lunch, The Country Cafe. They close around 3:00 PM each day. Good food at reasonable prices. For dinner, The Anvil Restaurant. Good selection of steaks and a full service bar. It is a little pricey on a Thru Hiker budget but well worth it. The Canal House gets honorable mention for lunch and dinner but their portion size would nowhere meet a Thru Hiker appetite. There is no alcohol served but you can bring your own wine (maybe beer?). Prices are more reasonable than The Anvil.

Got a great cheese-steak sandwich at Cannonball Deli. Cannonball Deli offers AT hikers a discount too.

Secret Six is a nice place with good food and beer, but it is pricey. I think I paid $14 for a beer and a grilled ham & cheese sandwich.

Anvil is closed on Tuesdays and wednesdays in Sept. The Towns Inn (the hostel next to the Outfitters) has a filling dinner for $17, blackened chicken or blackend trout. Very good. Just ate there tonight.

We always go to Secret Six. Love the outdoor patio - especially when we're sweat soaked and rank from a long day hike. Food has vastly improved over the past couple of years and the on-tap beers are excellent. Service can take some time but we're never in that kind of hurry and it's fun to look up at Maryland Heights and watch the teeny people waaaay up there on the rocks.

When the weather is nice I like eating on the deck at the Secret Six Tavern.
