A smart phone could be a lighter option if you consider its weight vs a phone + gps + MP3 Player + camera + etc... You could even use it to replace a notepad/journal and books as mentioned earlier. Of course a lot of us would leave some of that behind anyways so add the weights plus any extra chargers or batteries etc. to come up with a better number.

That's my excuse anyways.
