Thread: Thumb holes

    Default Thumb holes

I see these holes in a lot of clothing now......What is the real purpose to them? The only thing that comes to mind is putting on a jacket over the pullover/item that has thumb holes. Is this it? Or using them with a pair of gloves? Or it it just a ridiculous fashion statement?

I've only seen them on long underwear or bicycling long sleeved jerseys. I think that they are primarily to keep them from riding up as you put other clothing over them, plus, they ensure a better seal between gloves and the base layer.

I always referred to them as thumb holsters. It is more fun that way.

    Built-in, lightweight fingerless gloves.

Started with bike clothing to keep your sleeves from riding up your arms. Becoming increasingly popular with cool-weather tops to keep your wrists from being exposed to the elements.

Icebreaker makes the best sweaters with thumb holes - my favorite.
