Default 2012 Charity Hike & Raffle

    Hi Everyone,

I'll be hiking from the NY/CT border north to Dalton, MA for charity (over 100 miles) the first week in June 2012. 20% of all donations from the event will be donated to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Last year I was able to raise $300 for the ATC through this method.

I was also able to get a good number of cottage industry vendors to donate items or discounts for a raffle. All people who donate $10 or more will automatically be entered into the raffle.

All information can be found here:

    http://watermonkey.net/h3-initiative-charity-hike/

Thank you in advance for any donations you can provide to my cause.

    Kind regards,

    Raul

Ya know, when I first read this...I said to myself..."oh great, another 'charity' hike so some schmuck gets a free trip". But from the website, it looks like the charity is actually Strength for Life getting the bulk of donations, and ATC gets the other 20%.

You didn't mention Strength for Life in your post. Confirm/clarify??

It gets tricky on what info I'm allowed to put out on forums regarding charity events. I get zero benefit from this charity. I'm funding the hike myself so all proceeds go to the charities. Same as I did last year. Check out my video on that page I'm pretty clear on the whole process. Thanks for taking the time to check it out.

Just to be crystal clear on this forum here's how the charity thing is going to work:

    1) all donations are asked to be given to strength for life through the donation page set up through them (or mail them a check)

    2) after the event is over Strength for Life will donate 20% of the donations received to the ATC which they did last year for me

    3) also after the event I will personally donate the equivalent of 10% of the total donations made from my personal bank account to the Alzheimer's Foundation

No money goes through me. This whole thing is as legit as you could possibly make it.

I also hate the schmucks who try to get a free ride out of the donations. This is not that kind of "charity" event. This is a 501 c 3 corp so all donations are tax deductible.

Also, your donation of $10 or more will enter you into a raffle from some well known cottage industry vendors as they have donated to a raffle to be performed.

I'll be happy to answer any questions anyone may have on this. Also, Here's the trailer from last year's charity hike:

$405 generated so far! Which means $81 has been raised for the AT so far!

Still far from my goal if you believe this charity hike and the charities involved are worthy please help out by donating. All donations of $10 or more enter you in a raffle for hiking goods or discounts.

    UPDATE TO THE RAFFLE:

Got 2 new vendors who wanted to donate to the raffle:

NK Outdoors - donated a hammock with suspension - Listed in the $25 donation raffle

Hammock Gear - donated a down top quilt and a down under quilt - now listed in the $50 donation raffle

All donations $10.00 or more automatically enters you in the raffle!

ANOTHER VENDOR ADDED TO THE RAFFLE:

Jose over at http://www.diaztools.com/ has graciously offered his RANA Neck knife to the raffle - $25 Raffle

Also, He has also offered an additional 30% off of any of his knives to those who donate to the event. If you already donated this includes you too!

As always no money goes through me it all goes to the charities directly and the ATC will benefit from 20% of your donation.

As Sly stated Strength For Life is the main charity. I worked out a deal to have 20% of the donations received by them to be transferred to the ATC in lieu of any travel reimbursements.

Why are you taking so long to hike it? That's a 5 to 6 day hike. Maybe 7 if you are taking your time. Is this paid vacation you are on? The section is pretty nice and mostly easy. What type of gear you carrying? It's quite commendable your efforts. I applaud you.

I hike between 10-18 miles per day (18 is actually pushing it) which is why it is taking me approx 10-12 days to hike the 100 miles. I don't get out on the trail as often as I can for several reasons thus my MPD isn't very high.

Plus I'm staying a couple of days in Great Barrington to resupply, shower, get some town food.

yes I'm on paid vacation from work the 2 weeks I'm out hiking.

If you check out www.watermonkey.net I have a gear list video from last year. I have some changes made (Zpacks Blast 30 and using the Traveler with a papa surf bug sock). I'm projecting my Base Weight at around 8 lbs with a total pack weight for 6 days of 23 lbs.
