Default Plotting progress on map from the trail?

On my next hike I plan to use a Postholer journal and they have a slick way to update your journal via email, including updating a Google map, using coordinates in a properly formatted email. That only works for trails they have a map for, however, so it won't work for me on this hike.

I'd like to figure out a way to do something similar via email or ideally a text message from the boonies. What are the options? I want to do it via mobile phone, not a Spot.

Delorme recently came out with the Inreach satellite communicator. They make two versions of Inreach. One can pair with an Android platform cell phone, the other can pair with a Delorme handheld GPS. Both versions can act as stand alone satellite trackers (depends on the yearly subsciption you purchase....more money means more bells/whistles) You can pair it with a phone, for instance, to send or recieve a short text. You can also set the Inreach to track your journy at timed intervals. Folks at home can watch you progress online, on a map.

They are fairly new, so I can't vouche for reliability. The android Inreach sells for like $250 + whatever level plan you buy.

Default Here's how I am going to update my position on a map from the trail

I made a Google Map and embedded it on my website. http://www.bucktrack.com/The_Desert_Trail_Map.html

The hard part was trying to figure out how to update the map from the trail with an iPhone. It looks like The Cartographer is going to do exactly what I want. I can sync with my Google map and easily mark my current position so it appears on my website. Pretty cool. http://cartographer-app.com/

Which trail will you be hiking?

Additionally, you can tweet your location into your journal and have it show up on the google map regardless of trail. This shows how:

The Desert Trail. http://postholer.com/Colter It's not widely known.

By the way, I really like the Postholer journals. Very feature rich. That's a great tip about twitter location updates.
