I reduced the pot stand down to 1.5 inches using a piece of half inch hardware cloth last night. The pot stand goes around the stove about 80 percent of the way. I got these results:
With can style pot stand: averaged about an 11 minute boil time.
With hardware cloth pot stand(2 inches): boil time was 10 minutes.
With hardware cloth pot stand(1.5 inches): my first burn boiled in only 5 minutes
If I get time today I may make another pot stand only and inch tall and see what happens. I'll hunt down my camera also and get some pictures of mine.
Here are some pictures essentially of what mine looks like. Mine does not detach at the top like this one does and the cloth pot stand is only three squares tall. I also cut off the top horizontal bar and folded down the pieces to make a better pot stand, like the last picture, but I folded mine inward and they are only .5 inches long.
