If I may put in a shameless plug for The Trail Show

"Car Talk" from NPR meets Backpacker Magazine.

A round table discussion were we talk about trail, hiking ,beer...and whatever else. Lately we've been having guest panelists on (A CT record holder for example).

Our motto is "Less gear and more beer!" No celebrity hiker interviews or gear manufacturers.

Picture sitting at a shelter, hanging around the campfire and shooting the breeze. That's our show.

STart with episode 3 or 4 it is where we hit our stride.

We record an episode once a month as that seems to be a sweet spot for those with busy lives and not burning out.

I have been listening to the Trail Show and I really enjoy it. I appreciate the work you guys put into it. I honestly would like to hear a little about gear though. Not interviews with gear manufacturers or anything like that. Of all the gear talk that goes on though, it's people like you who have loads of experience that I would like to hear what worked and didn't work from.

I think because we ARE experienced, gear is the one our least favorite topics.

While someone like me is happy to answer questions about gear on the various forums, it is another ball of wax to actively go out of our way to discuss gear. I've noticed the more a person has done, the less they seem to be infatuated with gear (usually..not always)


Besides, they are plenty of places on the net that DO answer gear questions.

And, we did review Gatorade bottles and aluminum foil afterall.

Listened to the Outdoor Station podcast with Ron from SMD. It was very interesting. It sounds like it is the first in a series about the future of the UL industry. Its a response to an article from Backpacking Light about lack of innovation from the cottage industry which I haven't actually read because I don't have a subscription to BPL. He says they have some major things coming down the pipeline that he will announce at the end of the month. He also discusses his decision to outsource the manufacturing of certain items to Asia at length. Very good quality podcast. Future episodes will be with Gossamer Gear and Tarptent.

Instead of worrying about gear, we tend to focus on the Thru-Hiker experience...and other stuff: shelters, poop, trail towns, James Brown, poop, bars, food, hostels, and Tyler Perry presents: Alanis Morissette
Sometimes the show will have a theme (Weather, Crazy People, Trail Magic, etc.) and we'll encourage hikers to call our hotline (828-394-4526) and leave a message.
Also...our podcast is chock full of profanity.

I listened to part two of Ron from SMDs Outdoor Station podcast. It was okay. This is a little off topic but I see that SMD bumped their cuben fiber products up in price "so that our retailers will have enough margins to make it worthwhile." That doesn't really make sense to me because then I wouldn't expect to pay an inflated price when buying directly from SMD and not from a retailer.
