Should be lots of info about it in your guidebook. Most common is hitch to Millinocket, shuttle/hitch to Medway, bus from there.

100 miles by canoe, downstream. Just saying.
99% of the traffic leaving the south gate at Togue Pond are driving south to Millinocket and then south on I 95 which goes right through Bangor. The majority of the campers in the park are people who most likely want to hike the AT if they havent already and will give you a ride if they have room. I would not worry unless you are in a rush or in a large group.
How to get to Bangor ....... I would suggest a few drinks first .
I am actually considering turning around and hiking back to NJ Forest Gump style. But we will see how I feel after 2182 miles to finalize that plan.
Katahdin Air will pick you up and fly you to Bangor
Third boxcar, midnight train.
It's already been covered, but I'll expound a bit.
Coming back down the Hunt Trail or if you choose Abol Slide - either way, you'll be able to find someone, surely, who can hitch you to Millinocket (closest town) or Medway (on 95) motels, hotels and campgrounds. If not, there are likely some stealth spots around, just be careful, and hitch out the next day. Or call Maine Quest Adventures, they'll give you a lift. Or for a bit more money call the Appalachian Trail Lodge, which also provides a roof over your head and a warm meal.
From Medway, you can catch the CYR Bus down to Bangor for around $12/person and looks like it leaves 9:30 a.m. - or pay a ton more and get a taxi up from Bangor - also Maine Quest Adventures can likely be talked into driving you to Bangor as well. Keep in mind (and I hope this has been updated for this year) that Town Taxi in Millinocket/Medway is no longer in service - their numbers have been disconnected and they cannot be reached (unless someone can tell me otherwise?)
