Default What is your stupid item?

On another thread the idea of a stupid item came up. It is something you really do not need but bring anyway.

My stupid item is a little stuffed monkey my daughter sneaks into my pack before I leave. Weighs maybe an ounce but he always goes with me.

Headed out for a weekend, and just put 1/4 oz soap and deodorant in dropper bottles for weekends and overnights - sure I'll use it this summer, but not sure about the entire AT. Easy to refill from a bounce box, though!

Bringing both merino balaclava and wool cap, either is fine both is probably stupid, but Ill bring it anyway and see. Also waterproof gloves, seems like a good idea so I am bringing them, but I probably dont need it because of the extra weight versus non-waterproof wool gloves.

My flowery silk headband. Weighs nothing and my hair is short so it's a totally useless girly thing, but I like knowing it's there if I want it and need to feel like a female for at least a little bit!

I haven't thought of anything yet. It kinda makes me sad

I was thinking maybe a windchime or something to hang up in shelters, but that'd probably just bug people.

People understand why I bring a paperback book. Most understand why I bring a second paperback book -- in case I finish the first one before town. Its the third book that most hikers think is stupid.

My definition of a stupid item is different than the OPs. A stupid item IMO is something makes perfect sense to the one carrying it; its other hikers that think its stupid.

    .................................................. ....
Ahhhh, but are the all the SAME book??

And how many hikers want to BORROW your book?
And where do you keep your crayons while hiking??

I'm in #8 of a 13 *thick* paperback book series and plan to keep at least one with me so I can finish the series! I don't want to forget what I started 5 months ago and have to start over............wait, if I fogot, it would be a whole new series to me! Never mind.

    Both definitions are correct.

Nope no stupid items yet, doubt there will be. Anyone carry an wolverine, now that might be stupid. No, now that I think about it, a woverine would keep you warm at night and you'd have shelters to your self.

The only stupid thing I take is the loose wingnut carrying my pack.

Yes but there are many more items that are stupid by the second definition.

I'm carrying a recording microphone, extra batteries and sd cards. It isn't really that heavy, and I'm hoping to find a lot of inspiration for regular recordings.

Agreed. But is too easy to find fault with others. It's harder to look at yourself and point out your stupid item!

I always took the "stupid item" as something that legit has no function other than a personal attachment to it. Not just something that you'd use, but is heavier than other items, or a luxury item like fuzzy slippers.

And with that, I think I just thought of mine. A little less obnoxious than wind chimes for the shelter: a triangle that I can ring when it's dinner time.

    Mwahahaha.
