Default Cake Contest at ATC in Harpers Ferry today

Today we're holding our second annual Cake Contest and ATC birthday celebration.

I've seen one submission, and although I can't divulge any details, it's spectacular. Anyone who loves the A.T. would be wowed by it. If you want to see the cakes in their pristine state, come to ATC before 1:00 (cakes will be arriving throughout the morning).

If you just want to eat cake (we have 13 to be eaten, including a giant-sized one), come between 1:45 and 3:30.

The full details are below. We have events every month in Harpers Ferry this year, with a listing at www.appalachiantrail.org/events.

    Hope to see you!

Cake Baking Contest and ATC Birthday Party

    Dates: 03 – 03 Mar, 2012
Location: Harpers Ferry, WV, United States
Address: ATC Headquarters - 799 Washington Street
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) will hold a cake-baking contest to celebrate its 87th anniversary on Saturday, March 3rd from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at ATC’s Visitor Center in Harpers Ferry, WV. This event is free and open to the public.

Contestants will bake their favorite type of cake and give it an Appalachian Trail (A.T.) theme. People can register for this contest by sending an email to [email protected] with their name, whether or not they are under 18, and type of cake they plan to make no later than Friday, March 2nd at 3:00 pm. Cake submissions must be dropped off at the ATC’s Visitor Center between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3rd.

Judging will begin at 1:00 p.m. Judges include; Ed Wheeless, co-owner of Laurel Lodge B&B in Harpers Ferry and trained in pastry arts at L’Academie de Cuisine, Warren J. Eng, culinologist & Senior Sales Associate at Sur La Table in Pentagon City, and Gary “Babu Simba” Hill, 2008 thru-hiker and winner of last year’s cake baking contest.

Prizes will be given to the winners of three categories: best tasting, best A.T.- related design, and best junior entry (under 18).

The ATC was founded on March 3rd, 1925 to oversee the building of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.). Since then, with the help of legions of volunteers and many federal and state partners, the ATC has helped the A.T. grow from little more than a bold concept to a 2,000-mile, protected footpath that has become the world’s most famous hiking trail.

Can we get pic's posted for those of us who live way too far away to just drop in?

    Old Boot and Kerosene,

We'll be posting pictures on the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Facebook page--should I post them here, too? What's the best way to do that?

Definitely please post them here too! I'm one of the 'dinosaurs' that doesn't do Facebook!

As to how to post them here, someone else will have to coach you on that one.

A newspaper from Hagerstown, Maryland did a nice story and video on ATC Birthday Celebration/Cake contest: http://your4state.com/fulltext?nxd_id=240932.

There were a few errors (true of just about any newspaper story), but overall the highlights were excellent with some great quotes. Dave "Pop Tart" Tarasevich is a star! Harpers Ferry-Bolivar's new A.T. Ambassador, Kweli Kitwana, rivals Pop Tart for energy and enthusiasm about the A.T.

We had a great turnout-13 cakes, 87 visitors, and lots of members of the local community. Four local businesses participated: Teahorse Hostel, Canal House Restaurant, and the Jefferson County Tourist Info Center.

Our judges--all within a half-mile radius of ATC--had impressive resumes: - Ed Wheeless, Laurel Lodge, trained in pastry arts at L’Academie de Cuisine; Warren Eng, Culinologist & Senior Sales Associate at Sur La Table in Pentagon City; Gary "Babu" Hill, '08 thru-hiker and winner of last year’s cake contest, former restaurant owner and kitchen design consultant.

Photos will come later. A beginner's photography class came and took photos, so we'll had a lot to choose from!

Assuming that you will be uploading more than 2-3 photos, then the best way is to click on the green "Gallery" button towards the top left of each forum page, and then click on "Upload", which should be just below and to the right of the "Gallery" button on the succeeding page. From there, you'll have to pick each photo file you want to upload. Give them all a generic description, which you can modify individually after they are uploaded.
    .
If you just want to upload a few shots, then Reply to a posting and click the "Insert Image" icon just above the text box (should be 4th from the left). In this case the image(s) will be displayed as part of the post, whereas the Gallery approach puts them into the generic WhiteBlaze gallery under the topical area you selected (perhaps Get Togethers?).
