Default Camping section Hike from Springer to Davenport

I am planning a section hike this coming May and I am considering camping in a tent versus staying in shelters to see if I could have a little more of a wilderness trip . I was thinking of walking 12 miles a day and camping close to that mileage mark even if it means hauling some extra water for a few miles to get to camp. I am curious to know if anyone else has had experience with camping and hiking in this fashion and weather or not this gave more of a wilderness type experience ?????
    Thanks
