Default UL alternative to Vitamin I

Saw an orthopedic specialist about some pain in my knee yesterday. He betrayed his knowledge of backpacking with questions about how mountainous the trail will be, how many miles per day I'm planning, how heavy my pack is, and whether I'm taking hiking poles.

At the end of the visit, he recommended Advil. When I asked him about his thoughts on Advil vs Motrin, he said 1 Advil 2 times daily is less weight in your pack than 2-3 pills 4 times daily!

    Of course he's right!

Advil and Motrin are both the same medication, just 2 different trade names.

I think you mean Aleve, not Advil. Advil and Motrin are ibuprofen (aka, Vitamin I), which you'll need to take every 4-6 hours. Aleve is naproxen sodium, which you only need to take every 12 hours. Both are NSAIDS and both can have side effects if taken in high dosages for long periods of time. I bring about 30 Aleve pills for a week-long section hike, just in case.

I've switched back to good old fashion asprin. It seems to work just as well for me.

    Yes.

I find naproxen works well for me. One in the morning with breakfast and one with dinner, and my knees are mostly fine. But yeah, there are side effects for long term use, so check with a doc.
