The project in Damascusis being built with the help of contributions from the county and the town, a tobacco commission grant and a transportation enhancement grant from the Virginia Department of Transportation, with additional money being raised from corporate and private donors.
Good to see Washington County knows where to go for the money. Most states use the settlement monies to supplement smoking related heath care, Virginia uses theirs to make up for a lack of taxes and jobs from tobacco farming.

In the 1998 national tobacco settlement, tobacco companies paid out $369 billion to reimburse states for the Medicaid costs of treating cancer and other smoking-related illnesses. The Virginia General Assembly established the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission to oversee the distribution of Virginia's portion of the money, which was to be used to help localities most affected by the settlement.

If I had known my smoking was supporting so many, maybe I wouldn't have quit 20 years ago.

The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.
You never know which one is talking.
