Are backpackers addicted to bags? I have a sleeping bag that I put in a stuff sack bag that goes in a trash compactor bag and goes in a backpack bag that is sometimes in a pack cover bag. Sounds crazy.

When raining:
Quilt has a DWR coating
Quilt goes in a bivy
Bivy/quilt goes in oversized clothing stuff sack
Clothing stuff sack goes in plastic bag
Pack
Pack is covered by a poncho
Poncho may be partially covered by an umbrella
I've never heard anyone complain that their stuff was too dry.

Most of the time, my bag is the last line of defense against hypothermia -- If it gets wet, it's problematic. I'll trade the extra ounce of bags for the 7-8oz of extra insulation I don't have to carry because I know my bag will always be there for me.
Stuff sack-->Plastic Grocery Bag --> Pack Trash Bag Liner.
For me it makes things a lot more organized if items are contained to a defined area. With bags, searching for something in your pack is much easier, rather than having to sort through and move every individual item in your pack out of the way to retrieve one thing.
my sleeping bag is stuffed into the bottom compartment of my pack. DONE!...stays dry.

My bag is synthetic, and while a wetsuit will keep you warm,I still wouldn't wear one to bed:Sackapulsive Obsessive Disorder, but I'm getting better now, thanks for asking.
I'm not sure I would say I am compulsive about my bag, although I do make alot of mental notes when I see the first drop of rain from the sky when on a trip. I'm a down bag kinda guy and really enjoy a warm sack at night, n'uff said...
I used to have a red stuff sack for fire and stove. I had different color stuff sacks for each category: food, extra clothing, rain gear, plus net ditty bags for small stuff.
I have been in recovery for some time now.
1. I have limited the number of bags in bags to three.
2. I have a Sea to Summit eVac Dry Sack I am considering cuben instead.
Is this improvement? Am I getting well?
I admit I am powerless over bags: I am considering a cuben pack cover. But the dark secret is I have four sleeping bags (down, synthetic), two half-bags now three (because I just purchased another), and I hoard my previously used stuff sacks.
I think I will sell them, one day, on eBay. I try to give them away.
However, I keep them because I just might need to use them...
reducing the number of bags i took was one of many different ways i shave ounces off my pack weight!!!!

One night in a cold we bag will make anyone careful. Now onto obsession. My youngest put me into panic mode when he was in a rare cleaning mood. Asked me where he sould put all my backpacking stuff. Not the important stuff which is in my bedroom but the other pile.
Was going to put it down cellar. Tried to explain it was all important. I'm still worried he might the little ****. I'm picturing in my mind the extra tents, pads and sleeping bags getting damp and the stoves and stuff getting messed up. Damn kid would blame me when he and his friends had an uncomfortable trip since they always borrow my equipment.
