    Default hiking poles on train

Can you take hiking poles on Amtrak as is or do they need to be in a cardboard container?

    Thanks

Yes to carry, no to boxed.

The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.

I brought my pack and collapsed hiking poles on an amtrak trip from Philly to NYC this spring without any problem.

Don't let a conductor see them. I had mine strapped to the outside of the pack and was almost not allowed on the train. After I stuffed them down into the pack I was okay.

    Ditto.....................
Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

It sounds like he was a bit too responsible:

hiking poles are neither on the prohibited items list or ``similar" to anything on the list

Last spring I had mine strapped to the back of my backpack and got on with no problem.

With the minimal security on trains, I would be highly surprised anyone even paid a second glance. Besides not really much different than a cane or crutches... No problems in the past... Worst case, take a printed copy of the list mentioned above for backup.

I took mine secured to the outside of my pack with the tips in the bottom pockets and didn't have a problem. Of course I was taking AMTRAK from Charlotte to NYC at 1:30 in the morning so maybe everyone was a little tired. Had a great trip though.
