    Default Upgrade or No?

I'm less than two weeks away from starting my Springer -> Damascus trip. To say I'm antsy is an understatement. There are a few things up in the air but I have a good idea where the answers lie.

One thing I'm still undecided about is whether to upgrade my iPhone 3GS to the 5.whatever OS. I want to download a trail map app that requires it. I have regular maps and was not going to rely on the app, I just wanted to compare and see if in the future I could do without.

Any input on upgrading or not that's specific to iPhone needs/uses on the trail? Does the latest OS really drain the battery as much as people moaned about?

You should ask or look in Apple forums to see if that slows down the phone too much. I have an original iPad, and updated it to the iOs 5, and it's sluggish. Makes it hard to type, as the iPad won't keep up with my input. The 3Gs is an old enough model that I would check on that before upgrading.

Will probably slow it some. The new OS is optimized for the new chip set introduced with the 4S.
I am not young enough to know everything.

Thanks for the responses. I had checked/googled prior but all the results are a few months old. I didn't know if perhaps someone had come out with a "tips and tricks for updating" that resolved anything or someone had more recent experience.

I'm happy with the battery life I can get in airplane mode so I think I won't mess with what's not broken.

I guess you should see the reviews to decide on this matter.
