Sunday Feb 3rd, south of Kay Wood Shelter. Treadway was mostly dirt covered with a light dusting of snow at lower elevations. Higher up, old, densely compacted snow covered more of the trail. Like walking on styrofoam insulation board. Flat areas that hold water are icy. Microspikes were handy, but one of our party was fine w/o them most of the time.

Forecast is for some snow later in the week, but then rain--again. Still have a ways to go before Spring, regardless of the rodent in PA

Hiked from Rt 8 Cheshire to Pattison Rd in North Adams on Friday. Trail is in good shape, lots of spring flowers out. Splendid views on a clear, sunny day.

Blackflies are out too, but spotty. It was a breezy day, so most of the time they weren't a factor. When they did show up, it was mostly just annoying, they didn't seem to be out for blood.

The trail is VERY dry, our usual mud holes were mere shadows of their usual spring selves. Please be careful of fires (if you must have one) and smoking. It won't take much to get things going.

Still plenty of water at Nopel and Wilbur overnight sites. The last remnants of snow in the balsam shadows on Saddleball Mtn.

Bascom lodge (and the Summit Road) will open for weekends on May 18th, then full time in June. Upper Goose Pond Cabin will also open on the 18th.
