    Default Dogs on the PCT

I was reading that dogs are permitted on the PCT except in areas administered by the National Park Service and in the five California State Parks through which the trail passes.

My question is, do dogs have to be kenneled while hiking areas of the PCT?

    Check out this journal:

They hiked with their dog. They're really nice, and Jayhawk is very bright and communicative, so I'd contact them if you don't find the answer here or in their journal.

I'd be concerned about ticks though. I got enough on me this year, and dogs always get it worse.

You could hitch around the parks where dogs aren't allowed, but that means missing some significant and really beautiful parts of the trail. There are rangers in the National Parks who monitor the trails. We knew some hikers who attempted to bring their dog through Yosemite. They were escorted out and told not to return.

The PCT is very hard on dogs. The need for frequent long mileage days, heat, lack of water on the trail, lack of shade on large parts of the trail, volcanic rock and sand, river crossings, snow etc. mean that few dogs are really happy and successful. On our first thruhike we met a half dozen hikers who started the trail with dogs, none were still on the trail past Yosemite. We didn't see a single thruhiker with a dog north of there, though I have known a few people who hiked in other years who did so successfully.
