Default anyone eat garlic mustard ?

Since it's hard to get fresh greens in your diet from typical backpacking food, what about cutting up some wild garlic mustard greens and putting them in your pot with your Knorr/Lipton sides? Garlic mustard grows on the trail, is high in vitamins, and is an invasive exotic so it's ok to eat as much as you like.

I was out on a day hike in SNP and found some & put it on my steak sandwich.

    Hello DrRC,

You inspired me to go out and give it a try. I picked a pot full of young leaves and simmered them like you would spinach. I had them with a vinaigrette dressing.

Verdict: Not bad, sort of like spinach only a bit tougher and slightly bitter. I would have them again and on the trail I could see this as being a nice addition to soup, couscous, or whatever. I would only pick the younger tender leaves. The plants I picked from were in flower, and had not gone to seed yet.

    Thanks for the idea.

+1 on the ramps. They're an Appalachian staple. A little more pungent than garlic, IMO, but just as effective at adding flavor to pasta, soups, etc.

Garlic mustard? I pull it all spring in my back field. It's crowding out everything else!

May be good to eat but I guess not so good for the other plants
