The only situation I heard of while thru-hiking last year involved someone getting drunk in town and having a run in with some locals.
Common sense goes a long way in keeping you out of trouble.

    Don't leave your gear unattended.
If you don't feel comfortable around someone just move on.

Just use your head and be aware of what's going on around you.

Hikers robbed ? You mean victims of petty theft, right ? Items stolen without force.
That happens every year, packs being stolen or items from packs being stolen. I have bear spray I carry ,nothing more.

If you're scared of bears, carry bear spray.
Trying to protect yourself from a bear with a pistol will most likely get you in a lot of trouble and maybe dead.
Don't let your fears stand in the way of your dreams

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

I'm too tired at the end of the day to worry about protection.

The only protection you should carry on the AT is a jimmy hat in case you get lucky.
