just wonder if any one now how to get a ridge runner job or trail job
ok. legit. Does it require any running?
Its getting late in the season to look for summer trail jobs. AMC has been advertising for summer positions recently. Best idea is to contact the avrious trail clubs, like MATC, AMC, RMC. GMC etc.
ATC is the overall lead on the A.T. ridgerunner program and most of the applications are funneled through us. Funding is a combination of ATC, local trail clubs, and agency partners. ATC pays all of the salary of some of the ridgerunners, part of some ridgerunner salaries, and none of the salary in some cases where there are financially robust clubs. Ridgerunner applications are usually posted on ATC's website at the end of November or beginning of December, usually with a deadline of January 31. Most ridge runner positions start mid-May and run through Labor Day, but a few in the South start in late February/early March, and one of the Maryland positions usually goes through the end of October. Training of mid-Atlantic and southern ridgerunners is done primarily by ATC.
Backpacking skills, knowledge of the A.T., an outdoor recreation degree and/or experience in an outdoor recreation position dealing with the public, the ability to work with multiple organizations and agencies, good communication skills, and knowledge of First Aid, CPR, and Leave No Trace are all important, as well as a demonstrated ability to handle responsibility. Being a thru-hiker is certainly a big plus on the resume, but that alone is not enough to secure a job.
GMC, AMC, and MATC all hire quite a few ridgerunners and caretaker positions, and you can probably also apply directly through them.

Laurie-You have described perfectly the things that we in MATC look for in hiring folks for the seasonal positions. I continue to be amazed every year as we receive applications from those who simply love the idea of being part of the AT without ever having actually hiked much. Perhaps the most puzzling are those from people who have never hiked, live in a foreign country, and would like to be part of our "company". MATC would like to hear from people like you describe for the 2013 season. Usually we start the process in December and really narrow things down in late January. We have been fortunate this year to have hired an excellent group. I hope that all of the NOBO's will get to know them and let them know how much their work is appreciated by the trail community.
