By "north," are you talking as far as VT and NH? There are fees at some of the shelters in VT but staying at them isn't mandatory i.e. you can camp in the woods. NH - the White Mountains feature the AMC huts which are very expensive. You can avoid them but it takes some planning. How far north are you going?

I can't think of any fees for hiking. Some places do have fees for staying, like the huts in the White Mountains or some of the campsites, but you are not required to stay there. As Cooker says, it just takes some planning.

You haven't said where you are starting. Hard to answer your question. But I never recommend anyone out of their house doing 20 miles days until they have tiime to acclimate to the rigors of the trail. That's asking for trouble - i.e. injury. Also if oyu plan to start in GA - prepare for hot, humid days. If Maine you won't do more than 10 to 14 for many weeks.

10 miles per day is an excellent start. Right off the couch I can usually ramp it up to 12-15 mpd by the end of the first week on the trail. I'm comfortable with 15-16 mpd, with the occasional near-20 thrown in, but I've never been happy doing 20s every day on the AT. Other folks in better shape than I can handle that, of course.

Where are you planning to start?

He's starting at Springer - see this thread and offer your own ideas about his resupply options and other pointers. I gave mine but they're admittedly imperfect.
