so sad. Peace to the family.
Prayers going out to the hiker's family...
The article says they located his body in 15ft of water, but couldn't retrieve it, wonder why..
Wow,that hits home for me,Grew up with a fella that drowned, when he swam across the outlet of a cove,at a power plant along the Delaware river, current took him down stream, and divers found him about 12 hrs. later. They said that he may have been struck by a piece of debris, like a log or something and thats what likely stunned him.Condolences and prays to the family, shame.
awful really to hear this.... sounds like he could swim - guess he got cramps in the cold water.
My guess is that this was in front of the Pierce Pond Shelter. It's a beautiful place to be - really tragic.

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.
Woo
I know the hiker. I am only a few days back. No it was not him. This was a nobo solo hiker. He was with a few other nobo hikers at the time. Very sad cant say more until released.

Is this a pond that needs to be crossed or was this most likely just a leisurely swim? Really sad news. My thoughts are with his family and friends. I'm sure this won't provide much comfort at a time like this, but at least he died livin'!

That's horrible. Imagine getting that news on fathers day. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
Horrible news ! My condolences go out to the young mans family.
Getting lost is a way to find yourself.
I wonder if he was one of the kids I gave a ride to a little while back? The timing would be about right as was the age. Too bad, but too stupid too. That pond water couldn't have been more than 40 degrees. You don't last long in water that cold.

If anyone finds out more, please post it in this thread. I met a NOBO hiker named Parkside who fits the description and location... I met him down in Hot Springs doing trail magic then put him up for a night when he came through PA. Any time a thru-hiker dies it is tragic but I am really concerned for my friend.
I also met Parkside last month. I believe he is older than 20. Could be wrong I suppose.
Condolences to family and friends no matter who it is. Terrible thing to have happen.
Yes. Terrible news. Achilles from trailjournals is,also in the vicinity. Hope to see him post, perhaps with some insight.

Let me go
Good Lord have mercy. Who, when planning a thru-hike, says "You know what I'm worried about? Drowning." No one. We worry about lightning, blizzards, falling down a cliff, falling and breaking bones, hypothermia, running out of money, gear failure....but no one thinks "Man, I hope I don't drown." God Bless him for his effort and getting as far as he did. God Bless his family in their loss.

Let this be an eye opener...when hot, tired and sweaty, one should NOT immediately jump in water, = shock, cramping, maybe even cardiac arrest....up here in Maine, these waters never warm up enough to just jump into. EASE on down in it first....
Do one thing everyday...that makes you happy...
That is sooo sad!!
