Default Police evacuating AT in Maryland?

Wife called - friend dayhiking the AT posted that armed police are evacuating all hikers from trail between Greenbriar and Smithsburg while they search for an armed man. Nothing on any of the local news sources.

I'm 3 miles from the Wolfville Rd crossing so I'm headed down to take a look in a bit. If I hear anything that confirms or dismisses this, I'll post it.

Blissful is the ridgerunner near there - hope she's OK. Nothing about this yet on her Facebook page.

Picked up a hiker and took him into town. He confirmed police with assault weapons on the trail. They were not letting new hikers on. The story he had was that police stopped a car, the driver had a murder warrant and fled onto the footbridge that crosses Rt.70. From that spot you can go into Greenbriar state park or up to Annapolis Rocks.

Blissful just posted on FB about 1/2 hour ago. She's also aware of the suspect.

Well THAT explains it! Sitting with hubby and son outside at a Frederick MD Starbucks and watched a news helicopter circling in that area. We thought it might have been a traffic problem.....apparently not. I have a friend who might know more details, so I'll see what I can find out.

Thanks, Cookie Hiker, for letting us know that Blissful is okay. There should be lots of hikers in that vicinity about now. One bad guy can surely mess up things for a lot of people.

It says they stopped searching at 12:36 pm. But we were sitting outside at Starbucks between 1:30 pm and 3 pm and saw the copters up and circling. They may have called off the ground search but they were definitely still bears in the air.

If I read this correctly it sounds like another suspect is still at large? Is that correct?
