    Default Nido shelf life?

I broke a toe just a week before my departure date so I had to reschedule my Colorado Trail thruhike for next year. I'd already purchased the food for my mail drops and I'm trying to figure out what I can save for next year. I have several large unopened cans of Nido, they all have April 2013 as the expiration date which I assume is a conservative estimate designed to cover the company's behind in legal matters. Would they still be safe to use next summer? Would it help to keep them refrigerated until then? What about things like protein bars, will they be edible in a year?

Powdered whole milk. Stick the unopened cans in the freezer. It should extend the shelf life. I've had some for way over a year stored that way, and I couldn't tell the difference.

I've used Nido two years expired and it was fine. Store it in a cool dry place or the freezer. The bars will need some help--vacuum seal and freeze or eat them and get new next year--they get hard to face after a while so I would just buy them as wanted on the trail. Hope your toe gets better fast.

They might be fine to save for next year, especially if you refrigerate/freeze it, but I'd rather use it now. At home I use a can every 2-3 weeks. If you lift weights, consider it part of your shake. Use it in cereal, mac & cheese, coffee, tea, scalloped potatoes, tuna helper, etc. Or you can mail it to me.

Protein bars will probably be equally disgusting next year as they are now.

Sorry about your toe and your hike.

Just a reminder...as with any stored backpacking food, don't wait until you are on the trail to see if it's stale.
The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.
You never know which one is talking.
